Iowa I-74 Bridge demolished following months of careful planning

BETTENDORF, Iowa (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - It was an explosive start to Father's Day as the eastbound old I-74 bridge was demolished Sunday.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) used controlled explosives to remove suspension cables and towers on the old I-74 bridge Sunday after months of careful planning.

The demolition operation took place at around about 7:30am Central Time, and caused a temporary closure of the new I-74 bridge.

The Mississippi River was also be temporarily closed to commercial traffic and pleasure boaters for the demo.
