Sentencing postponed for woman convicted of wrong-way crash

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Sentencing for the woman convicted of killing a man in a wrong-way DUI crash has been postponed to later this month.

The sentencing was pushed back after Gomez's attorney requested a mitigation hearing during Tuesday's court appearance.

23-year-old Kiara Gomez previously pled guilty to one count of manslaughter, a Class Two felony, after she entered a plea agreement back in November, where she faces up to 10.5 years in prison.

"I am the strong woman I am today because of my dad. He raised me to be a strong, smart, independent," said Robert Shipp's daughter.

She adds that she's upset the sentencing did not happen.

"And the only thing that he did wrong that day was leave work early to watch Kansas City play Football on Thursday night. She left Golden Corral at 11:30 and decided she is going to get plasted and get behind the wheel of her car and drive," Shipp's daughter expressed.

She also brought her wedding photo from 14 years ago to court.

"I wanted to bring it...because to me, I look older. My husband, my mother, my dad looked just like this on September 7[, 2023] the day he was killed," Shipp's daughter shared.

She shares some big milestones where her dad will be missing.

"I want justice, for my mother, for my son who is getting ready to graduate medical school. My dad will never be able to watch him do that...He will never watch him get married," Shipp's daughter remarked.

Gomez will now be sentenced on January 30, and she's currently being held at the Yuma County Jail on a bond of $100,000.
