California State Fair opens amid heat wave

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Monica James and her family were one of the first to file through the front doors at the Cal Expo State Fair.

"This was [my daughter's] first fair so we had to come," James spoke.

Being prepared for triple digit temperatures means a little more prep with the clear bag policy. Plastic bags must be 12x12x2 inches.

"Think in terms of a one gallon Ziplock plastic bag, and that's the size that it is. Once you get inside, if you choose to bring in another bag, we will search your bags. If you choose to bring in a plastic bag and drop your other bag in, you are good to go with that," said Chief Craig Walton of the California Exposition & State Fair Police.

There are lockers outside to store belongings that can't be brought in. Cost depends on size; just scan the QR code, and make sure you are aware of a new rule: Only four children per chaperone.

After passing through security, people who walked in the door got mister fans. Bags complete with the whole kit, batteries and all to keep them safe from the heat.

When asked what he brought into the fair to be ready for the weather, Ray Palma said, "Water, water, water, and a good attitude."

A smile, sunglasses and plenty of sunblock will be the saving grace with this long-awaited summer staple.
