President Trump pardons Rudy Giuliani and others allegedly involved in bid to overturn 2020 election

(NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump has pardoned Rudy Giuliani and others who were allegedly involved in a bid to overturn the 2020 election.

Ed Martin, Trump's pardon attorney, posted the pardon order on social media Sunday night that included Giuliani along with many others including John Eastman, Kenneth Chesebro, and former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, although the pardons seem to be largely symbolic as none of the 77 people on the list were convicted of federal crimes.

The pardon is written in broad language that exonerates "all" citizens accused of election interference, but explicitly says the pardon does not extend to President Trump himself.

Since the start of his second term, Trump has sought to undo the narrative that he sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Those efforts apparently included slates of fake electors in some states.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued the following statement Monday morning:

"These great Americans were persecuted and put through hell by the Biden Administration for challenging an election, which is the cornerstone of democracy. Getting prosecuted for challenging results is something that happens in communist Venezuela, not the United States of America, and President Trump is putting an end to the Biden Regime's communist tactics once and for all."

In January, Trump also issued pardons for 1,500 people who faced prosecution for storming the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021 in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.
