State bans natural hair discrimination

(KYMA,KECY/CNN) - Discrimination based on a person's hairstyle is now officially illegal in Massachusetts.

The state's governor signed the crown act Tuesday --

Banning workplace and school discrimination against people with natural and protective hairstyles.

Those styles include twists, braids, and bantu knots.

They are all often worn by black people.

The sisters whose experiences helped the development of the law spoke after the signing -- saying they are grateful no one else will go through what they went through.

In March, the U.S. house of representative passed the crown bill, it's now in the senate.

If it goes through, hair discrimination would be against the law nationwide.
