WACOG's Head Start program provides free services to approximately 1,066 at-risk children and their families

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A representative from Senator Mark Kelly's (D-Arizona) Office visited the Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG) Head Start center in Yuma on Tuesday.

Katherine Phillips, Legislative Assistant for Senator Mark Kelly, took a tour of the Gwyneth Ham Early Learning Center.

She met with the center's staff and interacted with Early Head Start early learners.

Phillips was able to learn about the operations of the center and the children enrolled in the program, said WACOG.

She met with WACOG Head Start Director Deb Schlamann and discussed some of the challenges facing the program.

According to WACOG, there have been recent drawbacks in federal funding for the National Head Start organization.

Phillips said that Senator Kelly's office is committed to support Head Start funding locally and throughout the state.
