Megan Rapinoe, U.S. soccer great, announces retirement
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - The upcoming World Cup will be the fourth and now final game for Megan Rapinoe. The soccer great announced on Saturday that she will be retiring at the end of the season.
In a statement, Rapinoe says she feels grateful to have played as long as she did and to have been part of a generation of players who "undoubtedly left the game better than they found it."
She also says to have one last national Women's Soccer League (WSL) season and to go out on her terms is incredibly special.
She has scored 63 points for the U.S. in international play and her 73 career assists tie her for the most in U.S. Women's Soccer history.
Rapinoe is also known for her work on social issues and became the first soccer player to receive the Presidential Medial of Freedom.
The U.S. Women's National Team is seeking to become the first nation to win three consecutive World Cups, a feat no Men's Team has yet to accomplish.
