Border Patrol video shows 5-year-old abandoned near wall
SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Border Patrol agents rescue a five-year-old girl wandering around along the border wall in San Ysidro, Calif.
U.S. Border Patrol said it found the girl around 10 in the morning on Monday. Agents said they saw the child being dropped off near the end of the border wall. In the video, the child walks along the Tijuana River and into the U.S. Agents quickly responded to the scene and rescued her from the dangerous area.
Upon questioning her, they determined she was five years old from Guatemalan. She claimed her parents were in the U.S. but did not have any contact information for them. She said her seven-year-old cousin remained in Mexico with a man.
Agents transported her to the station for processing and notified both Guatemalan consulates and well as Health and Human Services.
“Sadly, this is the latest example of how the most vulnerable populations are being exploited for financial gain,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Thankfully, our agents encountered this child before any harm could befall her.”
