House votes to suspend normal Russia trade relations
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - Lawmakers are working to suspend normal trade relations with Russia in response to the Kremlin's brutal invasion of Ukraine.
The U.S. House passed a bill to suspend trade relations with Russia and Belarus Thursday.
The legislation now heads to the Senate, here Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he will work to get it quickly passed.
Russia currently has the "most favored nation" status when it comes to trade--meaning lower tariffs and fewer barriers.
But last week, President Biden said the U.S. would call for that status to be revoked, which would requires approval from congress.
Thursday's vote came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave an emotional address to congress where he requested more assistance to withstand Russia's deadly attacks.
