University of Alabama celebrates 60 years of campus integration

TUSCALOOSA, Alab. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The University of Alabama's Black Alumni Association hosted its annual reunion this weekend on the campus in Tuscaloosa.

This year's event, dubbed "Beyond the Schoolhouse Door," celebrates 60 years and 60 honorees of inclusion at the university.

It was June 11, 1963 when Vivian Malone and James Hood were able to enroll at the University of Alabama after then-governor George Wallace was unsuccessful at blocking their attempts to register at the university.

Organizers say it made the event even more special by being able to gather on the actual anniversary.

June 11, 1963 is viewed as one of the first major steps towards making the University of Alabama a more diverse and inclusive institution.

The Black Alumni Association aims to support and increase diversity at the university.

The University of Alabama still has the original doors of Foster Auditorium on display since that's where Hood and Malone enrolled.
