Story corrected to reflect that alcohol is believed to have contributed to the initial crash
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Police Department (YPD) says officers cited a teenage driver after he almost hit a crash site then careened into a ditch.
YPD says it started just before 1:30 Thursday morning along 32nd Street near Avenue 5E. A Honda Accord collided with a Chevy Silverado. Paramedics took both drivers to Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC). The 22-year-old man driving the Honda suffered minor injures. The 24-year-old driving the Silverado went to the hospital for evaluation.
YPD says alcohol appears to be a factor in that crash, as well as in the near-miss that followed.
Officers say, while they processed the scene, a Nissan Sentra tried to drive through the area. They say the car almost hit them and the disabled vehicles in the roadway.
Officers say the driver tried to get away, but drove into a ditch instead. YPD says officers processed the 17-year-old driver for DUI, issued a citation, then turned him over to his parents.
YPD asks anyone with any information about either of these crashes to call (928) 373-4700 or 78-Crime at (928) 782-7463 to remain anonymous.
