Mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile Virus in Imperial County

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial County Public Health Department announced one of their mosquito pools tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV) and another pool tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).

Samples from the mosquito pools were collected June 25 and the results were in Friday, which marked the first positive mosquito of SLEV and second for WNV in Imperial County this year.

"Mosquitoes become more active during the warmer months of the year, which increases the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. These diseases can be serious; therefore, it is important that individuals protect themselves from mosquito bites," stated Health Officer Stephen Munday, M.D.

Symptoms of SLE include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tiredness

As for WNV, symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
