City block saved from massive California building fire

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - A massive fire swept through a building under construction in San Francisco's Hayes Valley neighborhood Tuesday morning, causing it to partially collapse.

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) said the fire started at around 6:00am and burned in the area of Octavia and Oak Streets.

At 6:16am, the department said on social media the fire had reached three alarms and urged people to avoid the area.

As of 6:30am, the fire had reached four alarms. The department said there were 40 fire apparatuses on the scene along with 130 firefighters.

"Our members did a really great job in terms of looking out for the exposures on either side of this building...I'm really proud of the members and what they did today...really limiting the impact to an entire neighborhood. It is still under investigation at this time...I have heard of no injuries," said Jeanine Nicholson, Chief of the SFFD.
