California firefighters demonstrate dangers of fireworks

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The Los Angeles Fire Fepartment (LAFD) is warning people about the dangers of fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July.

The LAFD demonstrated the possible hazards of the Independence Day staple Friday, showing what the heat of a sparkler can do to your clothes, and putting the destructive power of firecrackers on display by detonating a phonebook and several watermelons.

Last year, an estimated 11,500 people were injured by fireworks, with the majority of these injuries happening between June 18 and July 18.

The LAFD encourages people to attend public fireworks shows done by licensed professionals.
