California school district shares space for sick sea lions

SAN PEDRO, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) is partnering up to offer a temporary outdoor care center to treat sick sea lions who are being threatened by a toxic algae bloom.

The emergency center is being set up on LAUSD property in San Pedro after the main center became overcapacity as the incidents for sick animals increase.

Many seals have been acting out of character on local beaches and the Pacific Marine Center said the behavior might be from the toxic algae bloom.

"If there is a need for an amplification of the space, we'll be here to provide it. We have the workforce that did this initial work and were ready to do more should the need arise," said Albert Carvalho, LAUSD Superintendent.
