HONOLULU (AP) — Sun’s out, guns out? Not on Hawaii’s world-famous beaches. Beginning Saturday, a new law prohibits carrying a firearm on beaches, as well as banks and restaurants that serve alcohol. A lawsuit seeking to block the measure argues Hawaii, which has long had some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S., is going too far. The state has overhauled its laws in response to last year’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that expanded gun rights nationwide. Before that, Hawaii officials rarely issued concealed carry permits. The lawsuit argues the restrictions on where guns can be carried make the permits useless. The state vows to defend the new law.
