AWC leaders selected for a national fellowship program

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Three Arizona Western College (AWC) leaders were accepted into the Dr. Ted Martinez Jr. National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) Leadership Fellows Program.

The selected leaders are:

  • Susanna Zambrano, Associate Dean for South Yuma County Services
  • Cinthia Alvarez, Director of Nursing
  • Dr. Cristina Gordon, Associate Dean of Instructional Development and Student Learning Experience

The fellowship program provides community colleges in the U.S. with potential leaders who meet the standards identified by the American Association of Community Colleges, said AWC.

It also addresses the underrepresentation of Hispanics in top leadership positions.

AWC said the program has become increasingly important as Hispanic enrollment rises on campuses of higher education, now comprising 27 percent of community college students.

There are 61 current Latino community college presidents, and 17 are alumni of the NCCHC Leadership Fellows Program.

According to AWC, on average, 30 alumni of the program receive administrative promotions each year and many also head for an executive office.

The program includes two culturally tailored residential learning seminars, year-long mentorship, professional career plan preparation, detailed assessment of leadership skills, and many more.
