KYMA

The new mascot replaces the "Arabs" which was retired back in 2021 after being in place since the 1950's - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Monday was the start of a new era for Imperial Valley College.

The school announced it would be changing its name to the "Desert Warriors," replacing the "Arabs" name which had been in place since the 1950's.

"The action comes after extensive feedback from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members," IVC said in a press release.

A vote was held among those groups to decide the new name.

"Desert Warriors" was the winner among three names proposed by the school, winning against other candidates including "Suns" and "Foxes."

IVC says the next step will be creating a design for the mascot.

The school also says they are "ensuring it aligns with the District's values of inclusivity and respect for cultural sensitivity.”
