Military Matters: Honoring Maj. Andrew Hovanec

For today’s Military Matters, we honor Major (Maj.) Andrew W. Hovanec.

Maj. Hovanec enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1975 during a period of economic difficulty. Hovanec began his career in the Marine Corps infantry.

According to a press release provided by MCAS Yuma, after four years, Havonic left the military to pursue an education and returned to the Marines in 1983 as a commissioned officer. In September 2000, he officially retired as a Major after 21 years of service.

“The Marine Corps stood out to me above all the other services,” he says.

Maj. Hovanec deployed once to Somalia- Operation Restore Hope.

After being retired for eight months, Hovanec was hired as the MCAS Yuma Comptroller. Andrew Hovanec has served as the Station Comptroller for MCAS Yuma for just over 18 years and will be retiring on October 30th. Upon retiring, Hovanec plans to pursue his hobbies of hunting, fishing and playing golf.
