Border Patrol stops sex offenders from re-entering country

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents prevented two convicted sex offenders from re-entering the country this weekend.

Agents made their first arrest around six Friday evening about three-miles west of the Calexico West Port of Entry.

Record checks revealed the man in custody was 54-year-old Petro Mata-Guerrero. A jury in Wisconsin convicted Mata-Guerrero of sexual assault of child in June 2013. He was deported after his release from prison. Border Patrol says he was also deported in July of 2011 .

Border Patrol picked up a second man around eight Sunday morning about seven-miles from the Calexico West Downtown Port of Entry.

Record checks identified that suspect as 49-year-old Juan Ramon Avila-Leon. Avila-Leon was convicted of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes in October 2018 in Washington state. He served just over a year behind bars, and was deported on September 5.

Both men remain in federal custody awaiting prosecution.
