Student in custody after gun is confiscated at local middle school

A student is the Yuma County Juvenile Detention Center after a gun was confiscated at Southwest Junior High School in San Luis, Ariz on Thursday.

Southwest Junior High administrators said the pistol found on the student was not loaded. They were able to seize the weapon before police arrived.

The middle school was placed on a soft lockdown for about two hours as San Luis police officers searched for other possible weapons.

“We needed to make sure we go into each classroom. We checked every backpack. We also checked students pockets, waistbands, and even shoes to ensure that everything was safe and clear for our students,” said Principal Duron.

Principal Omar Duron said the school was alerted to the weapon after it was reported by other students. This led the school administration to call San Luis police.

The suspected student has not been identified.
