Yuma family celebrates heart transplant of baby boy

A Yuma family is grateful after a baby boy was given a generous gift.

From the moment 15-month-old John Lucero was born, he had a condition known as hypoplastic left heart, which gives him trouble breathing.

Lucero was in need of a heart transplant and had no matches for a donor for several months. In February, John’s parents John and Annie Lucero was notified that they had a match.

A ceremony was held at Yuma Regional Medical Center on Monday to honor those who donated their organs to save a life, and celebrate baby John.

“It’s hard to express the emotions especially knowing that your good fortune comes through someone’s loss,” says Barbara Rouff”, John’s grandmother.

John is currently staying at Arizona Children’s Hospital in Phoenix along with his parents. Doctors say he could be released sometime soon, where he will then be transferred to Ronald Mcdonald House, where he will finalize recovery.
