Somerton PD awarded highway safety grant

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded the Somerton Police Department with grants in an ongoing effort to reduce the number of drug and alcohol-impaired drivers on streets and highways.

Safety awarded Somerton Police $3,100.00 in DUI Enforcement Grant Funding. This allowed the department to buy three new portable breathalyzers, which will be used during DUI and underage drinking investigations.

The department also received $8,100.00 for Selective Traffic Enforcement (STEP) equipment that allowed a purchase of speed-related equipment.

In addition to DUI and Traffic Enforcement, the department will work with schools, community groups and media in an effort to increase awareness of the risks and consequences of unlawful driving.

The grant is a part of the cooperative effort between the Somerton Police Department and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to fund proactive and educational programs.

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is the focal point for highway safety issues in Arizona. GOHS is a cabinet agency that provides leadership by developing, promoting, and coordinating programs; influencing public and private policy; and increasing public awareness of highway safety.
