BP arrests man convicted of sexual assault

Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales Station arrested five Mexican nationals Thursday afternoon and later discovered one was previously convicted and incarcerated in 2010 for sexual assault of a minor.

While patrolling west of Nogales, agents encountered five men found to be illegally present in the United Sates. A records check indicated 41-year-old Leonardo Anorve-Lopez had a prior conviction from Middlesex County, New Jersey, for sexual assault of a minor under the age of 13. Leonardo was sentenced to five years in prison.

Leonardo will remain in federal custody pending prosecution for criminal immigration violations. The other four individuals will be removed for immigration violations.

All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal immigrants with criminal histories are positively identified.
