Local fires may be linked to arson

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to an abandoned apartment on fire Sunday, in what they believe is another act of arson.

Officials said this apartment, located at 146 E. Spring Street, is one of 15 in a small complex that was condemned. The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department has responded five times to fully involved apartment fires in the last year.

They say they believe all five fires have most likely been the result of arson, being that the apartment complex is no longer connected to electricity or natural gas. The Somerton Police Department currently is investigating and have identified some individuals of interest in these fires.

Upon the arrival of the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department they found the apartment, in question, with a fully involved interior which had extended into the attic space. The fire was knocked down in approximately 10 minutes after which crews on scene mopped up all hot spots to avoid any rekindling of the fire.
