Topic of the Day: Teachers Wanted

13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has just signed State Bill 1042 into law; the new bill will change the way teachers in the state are hired. The measure comes as Arizona faces a teacher shortage; Governor Ducey has taken a play out of the charter school playbook to solve the shortage issue.

Charter Schools have the ability to hire teachers that are not certified and SB 1042 now allows for public school superintendents to set the qualifications needed to hire teachers, bypassing the Department of Education all together. Now, applicants just have to show a proficiency in the subject they wish to teach.

Opponents of the new bill are weary that the rush to fill vacant slots will be a disservice to Arizona’s students and that new teachers won’t have enough training to manage a classroom.
