Mike Ivers, fomer president of Yuma Food Bank, dies at 74

Mike Ivers, the former President and CEO of the Yuma Community Food Bank who helped feed thousands of families across Yuma County, has died. Shara Merten, the current President and CEO of the food bank said Ivers died Monday night.

Ivers started working with the food bank in December of 2011. He was there until the summer of 2016, when he was offered a position at Yuma Catholic High School.

Unfortunately he later had to pass on the position after accepting it because he found out he had pancreatic cancer. He went to Hawaii to seek treatment, according to a press release sent at that time.

Ivers graduated from DePaul University and studied at St. Mary and the Institute of Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New Orleans.

He spent 27 years as a Catholic priest. He spent his active ministry in Chicago’s African-American community, and was recognized for his community involvement.

Ivers was 74 years old.
