FDA issues new requirements for doctors who do breast implant surgery
(KYMA, KECY) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday it's changing the way it regulates breast implants.
The FDA said it decided to restrict the sale of breast implants to only health care providers who offer patients a checklist of the risks.
Doctors will now be required to walk patients through potential problems and have them sign off on the checklist that will show the patients were properly informed about the risks, including a possible link between implants and a type of cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
The list will also explain symptoms some patients with implants have experienced including fatigue, joint pain, tiredness, brain fog, and memory loss.
Also, a new boxed warning on the implants will inform women that implants do not last a lifetime.
