New technology to help self-driving cars

(KYMA, KECY/CBS) - Self-driving cars may seem inevitable but there are some obstacles before that becomes a reality.

There are a few cars today that can drive for you and thanks to newer supercruise technology, Cadillac's camera makes sure you keep your eyes on the road.

While certain other cars can drive automatically, they still require hands on the wheel at all times.

"It can be something that takes some stress out of driving but it can't be over-relied on," said Greg Brannon, the Director of Automotive Engineering at AAA.

One system at AAA is "indirect" and senses if the driver is holding onto the steering wheel and another system uses a camera to monitor the driver's eyes.

"The cameras are much more effective. In fact, about five times more effective than the indirect systems," explained Director Brannon.

This technology has developed only to help drivers but not outright replace them.
