Arizona Attorney General announces U.S. Senate run

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced Thursday he's running for U.S. Senate.

In the statement announcing his candidacy Brnovich writes:

“Trust is the cornerstone of our republic. But Arizonans have lost it – and for good reason,” said Brnovich in a statement. “We entrust our elected leaders to protect our freedom and they’ve failed us. Today, Arizonans lack confidence in the state of the world, the safety of their communities, their vote, their personal freedoms, and definitely in our representatives in Washington. What we have is a real vacuum of leadership.”

Brnovich is a Republican who came to Arizona at the age of two. He earned a degree in Political Science at Arizona State University, then earned his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Brnovich was a judge advocate in the Army National Guard before serving as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona. He was also a Maricopa County prosecutor. The governor appointed him director of the Arizona Department of Gaming in 2009, but resigned to run for Attorney General in 2013. He won the race, has served in that capacity ever since.

He, his wife Susan, and their two daughters still live in the Phoenix neighborhood where Brnovich grew up.

The former head of the Arizona National Guard, Maj. Gen. Michael "Mick" McGuire announced Tuesday, he too will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

Sen. Mark Kelly's victory in 2020 marked the first time in 68-years Arizona has been represented by two Democrats in the Senate. The Republican party sees Kelly's seat as integral in regaining control of that chamber.
