Investigation reveals India bridge was overcapacity before fatal collapse
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - An investigation in India has revealed that over 3,000 tickets were sold on the day of a deadly bridge collapse in the state of Gujarat back in October.
That's what a senior police official told CNN, citing a government lawyer who made those remarks in court the previous day.
Authorities in Gujarat estimate that some 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed, far higher than the capacity that was allowed.
The probe also revealed that parts of the bridge's anchor and cables were rusted and that some of the bolts connecting the cables were thought to be loose.
The disaster claimed the lives of 135 people, including 54 children.
