Councilman Pastor Hawkins hoping to represent the people in Imperial County
Pastor Hawkins grew up in poverty - Karina Bazarte reports
BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Councilman Pastor Brian Hawkins made a stop in Brawley on Tuesday to continue to connect with the community and discuss his desire to help change Imperial County.
Hawkins is currently a San Jacinto City Council member and a republican candidate running for the 25th district against democratic U.S congressman Raul Ruiz.
Hawkins says he wants to be a voice for the people who struggle with poverty. Growing up in San Diego… Pastor Hawkins says he grew up in poverty and it made him realize he wanted to help others.
"We have to do what the constitution wants us to do promote for the general welfare and this is the time right now that we start promoting not just talk about it," said Hawkins.
Hawkins says when he speaks to voters one of his main focuses is the city of Brawley.
"When I first started coming down here in the imperial valley, I noticed Brawley is a jewel in the county but it’s also an overlooked area and areas that are overlooked need the most," said Hawkins.
One of these places in Brawley… is American Beauty Academy school where Hawkins helped to get financial resources. I spoke to the owner who says she is impressed on how Hawkins connects with the community.
"I feel he actually is out in the community meeting and looking for the needs of the community," said Vanessa Herrera.
Hawkins is hosting a campaign event at the American Beauty academy in Brawley this Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.
