Remain in Mexico: Over 15 families prepare for asylum-court hearing

Over 15 migrant families traveled from Mexicali, Baja California to Tijuana, to an immigration judge to determine their asylum status.

This all happening under the ‘Remain in Mexico Policy,’ where one father who escaped the gang violence in Honduras describes as an injustice because many people can’t earn a living.

“At least in the U.S. one has more of an opportunity to work while fighting for your case and here we don’t have that,” said Edgar Dubon.

However, Dubon describes his journey north as a nightmare after he and his family were kidnaped along with 24 others in Guanajuato, Mexico.

“They asked for 500 dollars that my family was able to give it to them, we were able to call authorities, and they rescued us but others had to pay a thousand to be let go,” said Dubon.

Dubon said that if he was granted asylum into the U.S., he would like to get to his final destination to reunite with his family in Houston, Texas.

“We can’t stay in Honduras, we were lucky to get out of deadly situation twice, but who knows if going back we would be that lucky,” said Dubon.

Several of these families did tell News 11 that this policy makes it harder for them to seek asylum and puts them in danger due to gang members.

Although they remain in Mexico, they said they are still in harms way.

If you would like to help the organization, Border Kindness that helps provide assistance to these families you can head over to their website for the information.
