U.S. bracing for an influx of migrants as Title 42 comes to an end
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - U.S. authorities are preparing for even more increasing numbers at the border as the Biden Administration nears a decision on whether to end asylum restrictions.
This as the situation at the border continues to play out on a large scale with over 7,000 migrants being stopped crossing the border daily from Mexico.
The issue at hand is COVID-19. The Biden Administration will be making its decision on how COVID is being crossed over, but test results from several major corridors for illegal border crossings suggest it is well below levels that have triggered concerns among U.S. officials.
The positivity rate among 5,300 migrants tested last month at the Regional Center for Border Health in Yuma was just 0.1%.
Even so, in a 16 page document, Homeland Security says ending COVID restrictions on asylum “will likely cause a significant increase” in arrivals at the U.S. border with Mexico.
