Man with genetically modified pig heart has died

(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - A Maryland man who received the world's first pig-heart transplant has died.

The University of Maryland Medical Center made the announcement Wednesday.

Doctors say David Bennett's condition started to deteriorate several days ago, before he passed away Tuesday.

Bennett had been battling terminal heart disease and was deemed ineligible for a conventional heart transplant or artificial heart pump, making the pig heart Bennett's only option, which he received in early January.

The center said the transplanted heart performed well for several weeks with no sign of rejection until his health declined rapidly.
