One dead in single-car crash on freeway in Mesa area

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal crash on a freeway in the Mesa area.

Authorities say the incident happened shortly after 6 a.m. Monday on State Route 87 near Center Street in the southbound lanes.

DPS officials say one person was killed.

It appears only one vehicle was involved.

Footage from news cameras showed a damaged car amid some trees on the side of the road.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
