Scammers pose as cell phone providers to gain personal information
Scammers are posing as cell phone providers and putting all of your information at risk, according to the Better Business Bureau.
The scammers reach out to cell phone providers pretending to be a customer seeking information about their account. Once their information is revealed, the scammer then calls the person they were pretending to be and poses as the cell phone provider, said Janet Torricellas, regional director for Yuma County’s Better Business Bureau.
As the scammer poses your cell phone provider, they will text you asking you to click on several links. If done, your SIM card, which carries all of your personal information in your phone, will be exposed.
However, these are the red flags to look out for.
“Your cell phone provider will normally not call you, you would be the one calling the cell phone provider if you have issues with your phone,” Torricellas said. “Your cell phone provider will usually not send you any links to click on and give them access to because your cell phone provider already has access to that.”
The best way to see if there is an issue with your phone or service provider is to call the actual cell phone provider first, Torricellas said.
If you think you have been a victim of the scam you’re asked to contact the Better Business Bureau.
