Homeless mother wants justice for son killed in hit and run

A homeless mother is reaching out to community and state officials on Mother’s Day for tougher hit-and-run laws.

All Patrice Huggins wants for Mother’s Day is justice for her 11-year-old son, Avory, who was killed in a hit-and-run collision 3 years ago. She’s been promoting Avory’s Law ever since.

“Avory’s Law will do, will give stiffer sentencing to people who commit hit-and-run acts against minors that result in fatalities,” Huggins said.

She said she needs the community’s help.

“It’s very important that I have the community’s support so that I can have a backing when I go to the state legislators and representatives and bring forth this story,” Huggins said.

James Edward Killian was found guilty and given 3 years in prison – a sentence too light for Huggins. She said something needs to be done about those lenient and unjust sentences.

Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia introduced Avory’s Law at the state capital.

“We’ve had a number of discussions with both the family, law enforcement agents in Imperial County. Upon completing those discussions and doing our due diligence we decided to introduce legislation. And that is Assembly Bill 2014 Justice for Avory Glover,” Garcia said.

Patrice is homeless but determined. She said she often lives out of her car.

“And I’m doing all this with no job, I have two chronic illnesses, and it’s hard. But, this is for my son,” Huggins said.

She said justice for Avory has become her mission in life.

“When I had my children, I vowed to make sure that they were safe and to take care of them. And it sure broke my heart when Avory passed away because I wasn’t there to protect him. So, now I’m going to do something about it. I promised my son this. I’m going to do something about this. Something is going to be done about it. We did not get justice in the court room; we’ll get justice another way,” Huggins said.
