Children to hit the pools for swim lessons

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Swim instructors in Yuma County report an increase of parents signing their children up for lessons ahead of the summer months.

The pandemic prevented several businesses from being able to hold swim lessons last summer. This is why Rebecca Treas with the RM Aqua Academy believes there's been an increase this year.

The Yuma Fire Department reported responding to three child drowning fatalities last year. This year, the fire department said, luckily, it hasn't had any reports.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drownings are a leading cause of injury death for young children between 1 to 14 years old.

In Yuma County, residential pools are required to have at least a 4-foot fence or barrier and a motorized pool cover.

Friday's Early Edition News 11's Crystal Jimenez speaks with local instructors on how you can prevent child drownings from happening.
