Arizona woman injured in Las Vegas shooting leaving hospital

An Arizona woman who was shot in the Las Vegas mass shooting in October is making strides in her recovery.

The Barrow Neurological Institute said that Jovanna Calzadilla’s recovery is miraculous.

Jovanna Calzadilla, her husband, and doctors spoke publicly for the very first time. She said that she has a more positive outlook on her life.

“Even though I will not be the same old Jovanna, I will come back stronger,” Jovanna Calzadilla said.

Jovanna was among the 500 people injured in a mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival when the gunman, Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, killing 58 people.

Calzadilla was struck by gunfire in the head and doctors said that her brain injury was so severe, they discussed with Jovanna’s husband Francisco, about donating her organs and the possibility of taking her off life support.

“The doctors were pretty straightforward with us and gave us our options, and we decided to keep Jovanna alive,” Francisco Calzadilla added.

Jovanna was transported to Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix two and a half weeks after the shooting, after spending time in a Las Vegas hospital.

“I remember I spoke to three doctors there and they all told me the same thing that they couldn’t do anything for Jovanna. That it was a non-survival injury,” Francisco said.

Wednesday, Jovanna will be discharged from Barrow Neurological Institute.

“We will not let people like him win and we will not live in fear,” Jovanna said.
