Bed bugs force closure of DES Office

An Arizona Department of Economic Security closes after bed bugs are discovered in the building.

The Arizona Republic reports the DES office in Surprise will remain closed through September 30th as a precaution.

Caseworkers told the Phoenix New Times they were instructed to reschedule appointments to avoid spreading the insects.

DES confirms it’s told the office’s 135 employees not to make any visits until exterminators remove the pests. It’s also warned workers not to take any belongings home.

An exterminator has been doing regular inspections since the discovery, but has yet to get rid of all the bed bugs.

DES provides temporary assistance for residents in need, and coordinates care for people with developmental disabilities.
