Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigns
UPDATE (11:19 AM): Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has named a new acting director of the U.S. Secret Service following Kimberly Cheatle's resignation.
A statement from Secretary Mayorkas said Deputy Director Ronald L. Rowe, Jr. will serve as the acting director.
The statement from Mayorkas says in part: "I appreciate his willingness to lead the Secret Service at this incredibly challenging moment, as the agency works to get to the bottom of exactly what happened on July 13 and cooperate with ongoing investigations and congressional oversight."
While Cheatle issued a resignation letter on Monday, it is not clear when her last day will be.
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned after calls from both sides of the aisle for her to step down in the wake of the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
The resignation comes a day after she faced questions from lawmakers of both parties over July 13 Trump rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania.
An official announcement on her resignation is expected later this morning, two law enforcement sources said.
