Health officials say Yuma County is at low risk of contracting the virus
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Coronavirus has sickened at least 80,000 people and has taken the lives of thousands worldwide. Sparking fears that the virus could affect the daily lives of United States citizens within time.
On Friday, fears of the virus spreading within the community of El Centro and Yuma County were heightened as Mexicali reported to have a suspected case of coronavirus.
Since then, the coronavirus in Mexicali appeared to be false.
The Yuma County Health Department still wants to help alleviate the fear of the virus hitting close to home.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the virus as an emerging and rapidly evolving situation.
This past weekend two victims of the virus passed away in Washington State.
According to the CDC, the first man who passed away did not travel out of the country but rather contracted the virus through community spread.
He did have underlying health conditions, which the virus has proved to kill globally.
After news of the first U.S. death from the virus, President Trump held a press conference where he announced additional travel restrictions and warning on how to prevent the virus.
At the press conference, he also mentioned how more cases of the virus in the U.S. is likely, however, citizens should not panic.
In Yuma County, health officials want to emphasize how they believe the Yuma County is at low risk of contracting the virus even if it were to be declared a pandemic.
However, they are still continuously monitoring if the virus does make its way into the Yuma County, and local health care providers know what to do in order to isolate if anyone was presented with the virus.
Health officials say they have been down this road before with other viruses and instances, and have gotten very good at handling those kinds of situations to the point where they have been recognized for the way they respond.
