Antelope Lady Rams getting ready for volleyball season
The Lady Rams are looking to take steps forward in year two under Rhona Taylor.
YUMA, Ariz (KYMA, KECYTV) - The start of the school year is fast approaching and so is volleyball season. Teams across Yuma are now practicing for the upcoming season.
Rhona Taylor is going into her second year at the helm of the Antelope Lady Rams and she has her team gearing up for a season that they hope will see them make a run into the playoffs.
"Everyday we come in," Taylor said. "We spend time warming up, strength training, agility training. We run repetitive defenses plays, skills and drills. We are running a 5 -1 offense so we are running off of that."Â
The Lady Rams only have two returning varsity players from a team that went 11-9, so it will be an inexperienced group taking the court.
"These girls out here are amazing," Taylor said. "They come into this high school with not a lot of background. They don't have a lot of volleyball resources out here. They come in with good attitudes They come to learn. They come to give one hundred percent during their practices."
Despite their lack of varsity experience, Antelope hopes their team togetherness can propel their team forward.
"It's definitely very choatic," senior Kylee Richmond said. "We have a lot of fun on trips, you know, lots of fun in the hotel rooms. We are very goofy and we are very close. We just kind of make fun of each other and it makes it easier at practice."Â
These next few weeks will be crucial in their preparations for the upcoming season.
"Because we have a young team this year, we are really focusing on communication and learning to trust each other," Taylor said. "When you are on the court those are the most important things that build a teams strength.
The Lady Rams will get the balls in the air for their first match of the season on September 5th against Mountainside.Â
