Gila Ridge and Yuma Grit host free wrestling event for local athletes
The Hawks wrestling room turned into a place for iron to sharpen iron as athletes of all ages came out to improve their skills on the mats - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Thursday evening became a chance for wrestlers across the Desert Southwest to improve their skills on the mat.
Gila Ridge wrestling, along with Yuma Grit, hosted a free wrestling workout called
The wrestling room was packed with athletes of all ages, from kids in kindergarten, all the way to high school wrestlers.
Hawks wrestling head coach Abel Villamoreno, says that among all the sports available for kids in Yuma, he knows which one reigns supreme.
"I truly believe that wrestling is the number one sport in Yuma, a lot of talent here, so the goal is just to build up the talent and send them off," Villamoreno said.
Villamoreno also mentioned that the good turnout was a benefit, as the more athletes that show up, the better wrestlers they will become.
