Man accused of murdering 15-year-old rejects plea deal
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Emotions ran high at Yuma Superior court.
David Perez-Arzola, one of the two twin brothers facing accusations of involvement in the shooting of both an 18-year-old and 15-year-old boy, is heading to trial.
Perez-Arzola, 22 years old, was previously offered a plea deal where he would face up to 25 years.
After some consideration, that plea deal was rejected today in court.
The mother of the slain child spoke to the court with passion.
She stated how initially she felt sympathy in some sense for the Perez-Arzola, but the moment he laughed in court, she said she saw evil and that it changed her positive worldview.
Perez-Arzola's parents were also in court, and have been supporting their son at every appearance.
Perez-Arzola's attorney defended that moment by saying he was being inundated with the harsh statements made against him in court, and that his reaction would be typical for anyone facing false accusations.
Perez-Arzola claims through his attorney that the story being presented is not factual.
Judge Brandon Kinsey was quick to reject that request.
Perez-Arzola then rejected a plea deal where he would face 25 years over life in prison.
His attorney asked if the state was withdrawing the plea permanently.
Prosecuting attorney Meghan Gallagher shot back with volume and passion saying, "This is the state, and that's the answer!"
With no further plea deal on the table, the trial heads to court.
Judge Kinsey noted that life imprisonment is highly likely.
The hearing will continue on January 17 and KYMA will keep you updated on its developments.
