Federal judge blocks new Arizona law which would limit filming of police

(KYMA, KECY/ AP News) - A federal judge blocked enforcement of a new Arizona law restricting how the public and journalists can film police.

The ruling ultimately siding with the American Civil Liberties Union and multiple media organizations who argued it violated the First Amendment.

The law was enacted by the Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Governor Doug Ducey on July 6th, making it illegal to knowingly film police officers 8 feet or closer if the officer tells the person to stop.

It would have also applied to private property, where an officer could order the person to stop filming even if the recording is being made with the owner’s permission.
