All three suspects tied to Tarros Chicali firearm incident inch closer to resolved cases
One suspect has already plead guilty, another cleared to stand trial
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - All three suspects tied to and charged in connection to brandishing firearms outside of a Yuma bar last February appeared in court on Wednesday - each case inching closer to being resolved after 14 months.
Marvin Iniguez, 28, Rene Castaneda-Benitez, 28, and Antonio Campa-Robles, 26, are all faced with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The charges came after YCSO says the three suspects were sitting in a car outside Tarros Chicali on 16th Street with their weapons visible back in February 2021.
Security asked them to leave and they complied, initially. However, deputies say the men returned a short time later in a different vehicle. According to witnesses, they say the men pointed their guns at a person outside the club.
Iniguez, who is held on a $100,000 bond, was set to be sentenced in Yuma County Superior Court on Wednesday under the term of 4.5 years in prison - but sentencing was delayed until the following week after he requested a mitigation hearing so more evidence could be presented in his favor, potentially lowering the sentence.
Iniguez was initially set for trial back in February, but the lead prosecutor on the case was tied up with two other trials so it had to be delayed. Since then, he accepted the state's plea offer and will not stand trial.
Meanwhile, Castaneda-Benitez, who is currently out of custody, was also scheduled to go to trial in September, but that was put on hold last month when he was issued a mental evaluation to see if he would be competent to stand trial.
In court Wednesday, it was ruled he was competent to stand trial and he will be back in court for another trial setting in July.
As for the third suspect, Antonio Campa-Robles, he is also set for a change of plea/trial setting hearing next month.
