Calexico students leave class to protest for teachers
Update: March 31, 2022 - 6:52 p.m.
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Calexico Unified School District Administration made a statement regarding the students' walkout.
"We were disappointed to witness Calexico City Councilmember Raul Urena appearing to lead the student 'Walkout' to Andrade Ave.," began the announcement.
The Administration mentioned how they made sure students were safe during school hours even if they weren't on campus.
There was also a note regarding how students participating in a walkout are counted as an unexcused absence and may be considered truant.
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Students in support of Calexico teachers say about 200 of them walked out of class througout the day in support of their instructors.
This is just the latest in the battle between Calexico teachers and the Calexico Unified School District (CUSD). Teachers have been demanding higher wages for about four years now.
Additionally, teachers have also been asking for better health benefits. Students say they heard their teacher's insurance plans were changed making many of them upset.
We got reports that several teachers did not show up to class on Tuesday because they were so distraught by the changes.
Neither the Associated Calexico Teachers Union nor the CUSD has confirmed any of this, after multiple attempts from us to get more information. We hope to provide you with another update tomorrow.
