Former Imperial Valley judge to serve as first Latina on California Supreme Court

(KYMA, KECY/ AP News) - Former prosecutor and Superior Court judge out of the Imperial Valley, Patricia Guerrero, has been officially confirmed to serve on the California Supreme Court.

Guerrero is a daughter of Mexican immigrants and now becomes the first Latina to serve in that role in the state.

She will be sworn in Monday by Governor Gavin Newsom, who nominated her.

She was approved by a 3-0 vote of the Commission on Judicial Appointments on Tuesday.

She was praised by colleagues and members of the panel, mainly for the significance of her journey where she stood on the shoulders of her grandparents and parents who immigrated from Mexico to give their children a better life.

California will now join Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New York and Texas in having latina justices on their high courts.
